Natural gas is a fossil fuel

You may have heard that natural gas is a clean fuel, but what does that really mean? Fossil fuels were formed from the remains of living organisms. They provide more than two-thirds of the world’s energy, but they come with a price: they contribute to global warming. During the formation process, they are compressed and heated underground, releasing stored carbon and other greenhouse gases. As a result, these fuels contribute to climate change, which has caused dramatic changes in climate. And, as we use more fossil fuels, the problem will only get worse.

There is no doubt that natural gas is abundant, and this abundance makes it an attractive energy source. In fact, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has estimated that we have sufficient supplies of natural gas to last us until the end of the century. As of January 2013, the U.S. had an estimated 2,276 trillion cubic feet of technically recoverable “dry” natural gas resources. Total proved reserves of gross natural gas worldwide are estimated at 6,846 trillion cubic feet. Today, natural gas is used for power generation and heat.

Natural gas is efficient, especially in heating buildings. According to the American Gas Association, natural gas emits 90 percent less carbon dioxide than coal does, which equates to about nine average-sized cars. A typical home that burns natural gas emits around eight thousand pounds of carbon dioxide a year, compared to the nearly three billion pounds produced by an all-electric home. This difference in efficiency can mean significant savings in your energy bills over time.

In the U.S., natural gas is plentiful and inexpensive. In 2016, the United States consumed 27.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Despite that, a more realistic estimate is 800 to 1,400 trillion cubic feet of gas is available for the same or less price. This abundance is a direct result of advancements in natural gas extraction techniques, which have decreased costs and increased efficiency. These advancements have made it possible for producers to produce more gas for the same price.

Although natural gases contribute less to climate warming than coal, they still leak into the atmosphere. These leaks occur at every stage of their journey – during transportation along pipelines, power plants, and even in homes and businesses. In fact, methane is the second-largest climate pollutant, after carbon dioxide. Here are some reasons why natural gas emissions are a problem:
